NYPD Caught In The Act

Friend,   When we warned that the NYPD could use facial recognition to track protesters, some called us alarmists.   Well, the fear isn’t hypothetical anymore. Last week, new evidence emerged that facial recognition propelled the hours-long police standoff with Derrick Ingram, the co-founder of the non-violent activist group Warriors in the Garden.   The police raid on Ingram’s block was chilling, but biometric surveillance of protesters could be even more dangerous, giving the NYPD a cheap and easy way to track nearly anyone who speaks out against police violence. Yesterday, Mayor de Blasio responded by calling on the NYPD to implement new rules for facial recognition. We disagree. We don’t need to regulate facial recognition; we need to ban it. We’re doing a lot to ban facial recognition in New York, and there’s an important way you can help today. Join us in calling on Governor Andrew Cuomo to sign S5140B / A06787D, banning facial recognition in New York’s Schools. We need to ban all government use of facial recognition, but this bill is a crucial start, and with just one signature, Governor Cuomo can make it law.
